17th February 2005: New Orchestral Work

My new orchestral essay "Binn an tSíorsholais" will receive its premier performance at the RTE Living Music Festival at the Helix on Saturday the 19th of February at 8:00 pm. I will be giving a pre-concert talk on the piece at 7:30 and all are welcome to attend. "Binn an tSíorsholais" takes as its compositional premise the size of the Helix stage to allow for the division of the orchestra into 3 separate groups of 2 more or less equal groups of wind, strings and percussion on either side of a central brass, harp and timpani group. The music is composed to create aural light and shade effects which are enhanced by the discrete locations of the ensembles. The title as Gaeilge (in Irish) refers to a place discovered on the Moon which is always in sunlight except for during moments of eclipse by the Earth.
